In Moscow man arrested for series of rapes committed over almost 30 years

The investigating bodies of the Moscow Main Investigations Directorate of the Russia’s Investigative Committee continue investigating a criminal case against Valery Makarenkov, born in 1947. His actions are classified as crimes under article 131 of the RF Penal Code (rape), article 132 (sexual abuse) and article 162 (robbery).

According to investigators in the period between 1987 and 2014, he committed a series of robbery-related assaults on women in the city of Moscow. According to the investigators, Makarenkov used one scheme. He tracked down his victims in courtyards and parks at night or early in the morning pretending to be cyclist. Then he used force against them, strangled until they went unconscious, raped and robbed of money and valuables. He committed his last crime – an attempted rape of a 29-year-old woman from Moscow, on 26 may 2014, in the Kuzminki Park.

Thanks to modern high tech equipment of the Main Forensic Office of the Russia’s Investigative Committee the specialists ran and express DNA test of the samples taken from the suspect and in the shortest time established that he was involved in 19 crimes. The young woman, assaulted three days ago, recognized the man confidently.

In addition, the investigators are sure that they will find much more counts of his crimes, which are counted by tens. Over several years the criminalists of the Moscow Main Investigations Directorate have thoroughly studied the perpetrator’s style, made a list of men resembling the description in perpetrator’s distinctive features and the region of residence, age and occupation. The victims were questioned using latest forensic technologies and involving specialists in activating memory. About 20 thousand Moscow residents were checked during those years.

During their operations the investigators and criminalists held another suspect of another series of similar assaults on women and underage girls, who is under investigation at present. The investigators believe that the earlier detained suspect is responsible for no fewer than 7 crimes.

At the investigators’ motion court has ruled to take Makarenkov in custody pending the trial. The investigation is ongoing
