In Moscow investigation opened in fire in library INION RAN

Moscow Main Investigations Directorate of the Russia’s Investigative Committee has launched a criminal investigation in a crime under part 1 of article 293 of the RF Penal Code (negligence).

According to investigators, in the period between 2005 and 2014, officials of the Russian Emergencies Ministry revealed numerous fire safety violations in the Institutions for Scientific Information on Social Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Federal Scientific Organizations Agency (INION RAN), which the officials of the Institute in charge of fire safety were eliminated only in part. Failure to follow instructions of fire safety surveillance bodies by the officials of the INION RAN over a long period of time led to a fire that happened in the library on 30 January 2015 and affected over 2,000 square meters. During the fire the roof of the library collapsed destroying and damaging state property and part of library stock worth over 1.5 million rubles.

At present a set of investigative and search operations are underway to find out all the circumstances of the incident and identify individuals involved in the crime. The investigation is ongoing.
