Former director of INION RAN charged with negligence

Moscow Main Investigations Directorate of the Russia’s Investigative Committee continues investigation in a crime under part 1 of article 293 of the RF Penal Code (negligence).

In the period between 2005 and 2014, officials of the Russian Emergencies Ministry revealed numerous fire safety violations in the Institutions for Scientific Information on Social Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Federal Scientific Organizations Agency (INION RAN), which the officials of the Institute in charge of fire safety were eliminated only in part. Failure to follow instructions of fire safety surveillance bodies by the officials of the INION RAN over a long period of time led to a fire that happened in the library on 30 January 2015 and affected over 2,000 square meters.

After the case was opened Yuri Pivovarov stepped down from the position of the director of INION RAN as a lot of violations of federal legislation, including that regulating fire safety, took place during his office.

Today Pivovarov has been charged with negligence entailing destruction of the library and loss of valuable books. He was released on recognizance, he can’t leave Moscow Region.

The investigation is ongoing.
