In Sverdlovsk Region, medical worker to stand trial for negligent homicide of 2-year-old boy due to medical malpractice

The Sverdlovsk Region Office of the Investigative Committee has finished the investigation against a 57-year-old woman from the town of Nizhny Tagil, who used to be deputy chief doctor of City Infectious Diseases Hospital. She is charged with a crime under part 2 of Article 109 of the RF Penal Code (negligent homicide due to malpractice).

According to investigators, in early November 2011, the accused was on call in the said hospital where an emergency medical team delivered a 2-year-old boy showing signs of acute pneumonia. Despite the patient’s grave condition, the accused failed to take necessary measures to treat it or to prevent complications before the boy stabilized. Instead of constant control over boy’s vital functions and treatment in the intensive care department, the woman made a wrong call of consulting a surgeon and transporting the boy to another medical institution. A few hours later, the boy who had had basically no medical attention was again delivered to the same hospital and died there within a short time.

The investigators ran three comprehensive forensic medical examinations: on in Sverdlovsk Region and two in the RF Ministry of Health’s Forensic Medical Inquiry Center in Moscow. Conclusions of those inquiries and results of other investigative operations became the basis for the charges.

The investigators have enough evidence so the criminal case with the signed indictment has been referred to court.
