The Irkutsk Region Office of the Investigative Committee has opened an investigation in production, storage, selling of goods and productions that do not meet safety standards and entailed death of two or more people under Part 3 of Article 238 of the RF Penal Code.

According to investigators, from 17 to 18 December residents of a micro-district in Leninsky District of Irkutsk bought haw concentrate to be dissolved in water for taking a bath which had a warning on the bottle that it was not intended to be drunk. On 18 December, more than 10 people were taken to hospitals in the districts with preliminary diagnosis of poisoning with surrogate alcohol. According to preliminary data there are 18 victims, 8 of whom have died and all of them drank haw concentrate.

At present the investigators have assigned necessary forensic medical and chemical examinations, they are questioning witnesses and are carrying out other investigative operations to find out all the circumstances surrounding the incident. The investigation is ongoing.
