In Yaroslavl Region, man to stand trial for beating paramedic

The Yaroslavl Region Office of the Investigative Committee has finished criminal proceedings against a 23-year-old Komi national charged with battery under Article 116 of the RF Penal Code.

According to investigators, on 12 February 2017, the young man under influence and with traces of battery came into a shop in Gogol Street in Yaroslavl. Witnesses called an ambulance. In an ambulance van the man with no apparent reason and deliberately hit a female paramedic at least 11 times on the head and arms causing her pain and bruises.

The investigators have enough evidence, so the criminal case with the signed indictment has been referred to court. The accused had been released on recognizance.

The investigation was opened by the order of the Chairman of the Investigative Committee following media reports which resonated with the public.

Attacks on medical workers, paramedics in the first place, have recently become more frequent. Each day mass media report on yet another audacious assault on a medical worker in this or that region of Russia. This tells us only that a person who is hurting a doctor, is also hurting themselves and sick people who are deprived of timely medical aid. This is why such incidents must get tough and principled legal assessment and it is high time that any interference with the work of medical workers should be regarded no less seriously as impeding law enforcement. The Investigative Committee regards such interference as obstruction of professional activity of medical staff. We are going to use all legal power we have to protect the rights of those who help people no matter what.
