In Moscow, Khasan Zakayev found guilty of major crimes

A court has recognized the evidence collected by the Moscow Directorate of the Investigative Committee as sufficient to convict 41-year-old Khasan Zakayev. He was found guilty of membership in a criminal community, plotting a terrorist attack, complicity in hostage crisis, attempted murder of two or more people and illegal storage of firearms under Part 2 of Article 210, Parts 1 and 3 of Article 30, Part 5 of Article 33, Part 3 of Article 205, Part 5 of Article 33, Part 3 of Article 206, Part 3 of Article 30, Part 2 of Article 105 and Part 3 of Article 222 of the RF Penal Code.

The court and investigators have revealed that in October 2002, a group of armed people broke into the Dubrovka Theater in Moscow during a performance and took hostages 912 spectators and company of Nord Ost musical.

40 terrorists were killed during a special operation and survived hostages were freed.

The investigators conducted a lot of investigative and procedural operations on a high professional level to locate the accused and determine his role in the crime. Zakayev was a member of the gang headed by Shamil Basayev and helped to plot the attack on the theater. In 2002, he organized the transportation of weapons and improvised explosive devices to Moscow which were later used during the attack.

The investigators questioned more than 100 witnesses and injured parties, conducted a lot of necessary complex inquiries. Despite active resistance of the accused and his lawyers, the investigators collected enough evidence against Zakayev.

The court sentenced the man to 19 years in a maximum-security correctional facility.

One more accomplice Genrikh Dudayev is still being wanted around the world, while the rest six terrorists have been sentenced to long prison terms.
