In Omsk, probe launched in death of child after anesthetic shot in children’s hospital

Following a check in media reports the Omsk Region Office of the Investigative Committee has opened a criminal investigation in negligent homicide due to professional misconduct following death of a 10-year-old girl.

According to investigators, a girl went into a coma caused by severe allergic reaction to an injection of anesthetic in the nephrological department of Omsk city children’s hospital No 3. Doctors had failed to make sure that the girl was not allergic to the anesthetic. The child died on the morning of 8 April 2017.

Necessary forensic examinations will be conducted to find cause of death, to see whether the girl received correct treatment at the hospital and if there were possible defects in the medical services provided. Investigative operations are underway to find out all the circumstances surrounding the incident. Medical documents and a batch of the anesthetic have been seized and are being studied. The staff of the hospital and other persons whose statements are relative to the investigation are being questioned. The investigation is ongoing.
