Investigative Committee Chairman orders Central Office take over probe in unsafe services leading to fatal road accident

The Transbaikalian Territory Office of the Investigative Committee has initiated criminal proceedings against bus driver suspected of providing unsafe services that led to a fatal traffic accident under Part 3 of Article 238 of the RF Penal Code.

Following order of Alexander Bastrykin, the Chairman of the Investigative Committee, the investigation has been taken over by the Head Office.

About midnight on 12 June 2017, a bus capsized on kilometer marker 702 of Irkutsk – Chita highway in Petrovsk-Zabaikalsky District, Transbaikalian Territory killing 13 people. According to investigators, the KIA GRANDBIRD bus had moved to the side of the road and overturned. 10 people died at the scene, 9 women and 1 man. Two more died on the way to hospital, while another one at hospital. More than 20 more people were injured.

The investigators have examined the accident scene. Bodies have been sent for a postmortem.

The investigators have also identified the owner of the bus, who was the driver and have taken from him his documents.

The investigators are also looking into negligence of a road service company. Namely, despite ongoing repairs there were no warning signs set on the road, while the place where the bus went to the roadside had no railing. The investigators are questioning employees of the road service company, requesting and confiscating necessary documents.

They are going to look thoroughly into all the circumstances surrounding the tragedy. The investigation is ongoing.
