In Nizhny Novgorod Region, local resident found guilty of insulting police officers

A court has recognized the evidence gathered by the Nizhny Novgorod Region Office of the Investigative Committee as sufficient to convict Sergei Smirnov, 33. He was found guilty of insulting a representative of authority under Article 319 of the RF Criminal Code.

On 2 May 2017, a federal TV channel showed a story about wrongdoings committed by Smirnov who insulted police officers on duty. The Chairman of the Investigative Committee ordered investigators in Nizhny Novgorod Region to check the incident and open an investigation.

The investigators found out that on 1 May 2017, traffic police officers of Dzerzhinsk traffic police department arrived in Pozharsky Street to attend a road accident call: a car ran over a pram with a baby inside. On the scene the information was not confirmed, but the officers discovered that driver of a VAZ 2114 who had almost run over a pram was under the influence. In line with the law, the officers suspended the driver and put his car on a tow truck. When the car was being placed on the truck, the driver’s acquaintance named Smirnov started publicly insulting the officers by using obscene language.

The court has sentenced Smirnov to 6 months of community work.
