Group of experienced investigators of the North Caucasian Federal District Main Investigations Directorate of the Investigative Committee sent to assist in Dagestan

On 14 February 2013, at 4:40 a.m. a suicide bomber detonated a powerful handmade explosive device when the officers of the regional Interior Ministry stopped his car, presumably VAZ-2109, and were checking his documents at the Lava-250 checkpoint outside the city of Khasavyurt, Dagestan. The explosion killed three policemen, one is missing, six were hospitalized with injuries of different gravity, the checkpoint was badly damaged. There is a crater 4 meters in diameter and 1.5 meter deep. The investigating bodies of the Dagestan Republic Investigations Directorate of the Russia’s Investigative Committee have initiated a criminal case over signs of crimes under paragraph “b” of part 3 of article 205 of the RF Criminal Code (terrorist attack), part 2 of article 222 (illegal handling of firearms), part 2 of article 223 (illegal manufacture of weapons).

According to investigators the car was stuffed with explosive by unknown persons, who at night of 14 February 2013, threatening with guns, took the car away from a local self-employed taxi-driver. The power of the explosive planted in the car was 100-120 kg of TNT, this is shown by the size of the crater and the radius of car fragments.

The injured and killed policemen were attached from the Volgograd Region Interior Ministry.

Experienced investigators of the North Caucasian Federal District Main Investigations Directorate of the Investigative Committee were sent to assist in investigation.

Investigating operations are under way to find all the circumstances of the crime and persons involved. Investigation is to be continued.
