Sergey Kabalov charged today with attempted hijacking of aircraft and infliction of slight bodily harm

Moscow Inter-Regional Transport Investigations Directorate of the Russia’s Investigative Committee has charged a businessman from Saratov Sergey Kabalov with crimes under part 3 of article 30, paragraph “c” of part 2 of article 211 of the RF Criminal Code (attempted hijacking of an aircraft) and paragraph “a” of part 2 of article 115 (deliberate infliction of slight bodily harm causing short disorder of health motivated by hooliganism).

According to investigators, on 11 January 2013, Kabalov was a passenger on board of a plane of Kogalymavia airlines traveling Moscow-Hurghada and deliberately tried to seize the plane to hijack it. He used physical violence and threatened to use violence dangerous for lives and health of the crew and passengers. However, he couldn’t complete his criminal intentions as the crew stopped his wrongdoings.

In addition Kabalov hit with his head in the face and the stomach of a flight attendant. by this he inflicted bodily harm of a closed craniocerebral injury (concussion), which under the expert conclusion, are considered slight bodily harm.

Kabalov was questioned as the accused, did not plead guilty of trying to hijack the plane and said nothing about bodily harm. He refused to testify referring to article 51 of the RF Constitution.

Further investigation will be connected with a number of expert examinations involving specialists of psychology and psychiatry. Investigation is ongoing.
