Guilty verdict returned in Moscow over Sergey Kabalov, found guilty of attempted hijacking and minor bodily harm

The jury have found the evidence gathered by the investigating bodies of Moscow Inter-Regional Transport Investigations Directorate of the Russia’s Investigative Committee enough to return a guilty verdict on Sergey Kabalov, a businessman from Saratov. He was found guilty of crimes under part 3 of article 30, paragraph “c” of part 2 of article 211 of the RF Penal Code (attempted hijacking) and paragraph “a” of part 2 of article 115 (deliberate infliction of minor bodily harm causing a short disorder committed out of hooliganism).

The investigation and court have found that on 11 January 2013 Kabalov was a passenger on board of a plane of Kogalymavia airlines traveling Moscow-Hurghada and deliberately tried to seize the plane to hijack it. He used physical violence and threatened to use violence dangerous for lives and health of the crew and passengers. However, he couldn’t complete his criminal intentions as the crew stopped his wrongdoings.

In addition Kabalov hit a flight attendant with his head in the face and the stomach. By this he inflicted bodily harm of a closed craniocerebral injury (concussion), which under the expert conclusion, is considered minor bodily harm.

The court will pass a sentence based on the guilty verdict.

The Investigative Committee warns everybody who is going to try the same aboard aircraft, at airports or railway stations. By their inadequate and criminal actions the so called “air rowdies” pose real threat to health and security of the passengers and endanger lives of all those who are aboard the aircraft. Under the RF Penal Code such actions carry a prison sentence of up to 12 years.
