In Volgograd Region man accused of committing series of rapes and murders of women in Volgograd 18 years ago to face trial

Volgograd Region Investigative agencies of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation completed a criminal investigation against a 52 -year-old local resident. He is accused of committing crimes under Paragraphs "d, f, h" Article 102 of the Criminal Code of the RSFSR (the murder of two persons committed with particular cruelty and involving a rape), Paragraphs "a, j" of Part 2 of Article 105 of the RF Criminal Code (the murder of two persons involving raping and sexual assault).

According to investigators, in May 1996 and in February and April 1997, the defendant committed a series of rapes and murders of young women in the Krasnooktyabrskiy and Traktorozavodskiy Districts. He usually met his victims at public transport stops, led them to solitary places either by force or by deceit, where he first committed sexual offenses against them, and then killed them. His victims were local women aged 19 to 46. Upon discovery of mutilated bodies, investigating authorities launched criminal proceedings, but they had been failing to find the attacker for 17 years.

Only thanks to the scrupulous work of forensic experts and investigators of the Investigations Directorate of the Investigative Committee of Russia and experts and officers of the Regional Directorate of the Interior Ministry, together with whom permanent work is carried out to study the cases of past years, the accused was found and apprehended. In this, the key role was played by modern expert studies. Biological traces of the alleged offender were found at the scene of his last crime. Professional seizing of those traces by the investigator allowed experts to define a genotype of the offender in 2007. When checking it through the DNA database, it matched with the accused, who by then had already served his sentence in prison for committing other very serious crimes, including 13 years - for a crime against sexual integrity. He had been released from prison in 2011. He fully admitted his guilt.

Investigators collected sufficient evidence, in connection with this, a criminal case with the confirmation of the indictment has been sent to the court for consideration on the merits.
