Criminal case over Moscow underground accident passed for investigation to Central Office of Russia’s Investigative Committee

On the decision of the senior officials of the Russia’s Investigative Committee the criminal case over the accident in Moscow underground under part 3 of article 263.1 of the RF Penal Code (violation of transport safety requirements) has been passed to the Central Office of the Committee for further investigation.

According to investigators, on 15 July 2014, at about 8:35 AM three carriages derailed on 70 km/h in an accident between the stations Park Pobedy and Slavyansky Bulvar on Arbat-Pokrovskaya line due to violation of underground railway safety requirements. Over 100 people were injured and 20 more were killed in the accident. The information on the casualties is being specified. Moscow Underground Railway suffered great material damage.

The investigators are looking into several versions of the accident: faultiness of the car, failure of a switch, possible subsidence of the rails as operations are underway on the parallel section of the line. This way, the most probable version is a man-made accident. The data received by the investigators and criminalists during the examination of the crash scene rule out a terrorist attack. The investigators are also checking the version of a power surge causing the train’s sharp braking, but it has not been confirmed yet.

Necessary forensic analyses have been fixed, eye-witnesses and employees of Moscow underground are being questioned. Employees of Mosenergo have already been questioned.

As it is a man-caused accident, it is obvious that there are people responsible for it, so soon there will be suspects in the case.
