In Saint-Petersburg investigators hold member of organized group that committed terrorist attack in McDonald’s in 2007

Investigators of Saint-Petersburg Main Investigations Directorate of the Russia’s Investigative Committee together with officials of the Saint-Petersburg and Leningrad Region Office of the Federal Security Office have detained a resident of Saint-Petersburg born in 1989 on suspicions of a crime under paragraph “a” of part 2 of article 205 of the RF Penal Code (terrorist attack).

According to investigators, in 2007, Fyodor Kovalchuk, Vladimir Kosyakov and two underage residents of Saint-Petersburg decided to make an explosion in a McDonald’s restaurant located at No 45/2, Nevsky Prospekt. The accomplices made an improvised explosive device and set it off in the evening on Wednesday 18 February 2007. Eight customers and two employees were wounded while the owner suffered a loss of around 2 million rubles. The crime resonated hugely not only in Saint-Petersburg, but across Russia and was solved thanks to meticulous work of investigators and operatives.

In 2009, three accomplices of the detainee were sentenced to long prison terms.

The man has been charged with a terrorist attack. The investigators requested his arrest. The investigation is ongoing.
