In Primorye Territory preliminary check launched in sinking of Polain in Sea of Japan

The investigating bodies of the Far Eastern Transport Investigations Directorate of the Russia’s Investigative Committee have launched a preliminary check into a crime under part 3 of article 263 of the RF Penal Code (breach of traffic and safety rules for marine and river transport involving death of two or more people by negligence) after an accident with Polain MV took place in the Sea of Japan.

According to preliminary reports, around 3 PM, on 3 September 2014, Polain MV (flag of Cambodia, home port Phnom Penh, owner LLC «MV-LINE») carrying over 2 tonnes of carving wood from international port of Olga to the port Taytsang (China) sank in the Sea of Japan. There were 10 crewmembers (9 citizens of the Russian Federation 1 citizen of Ukraine). In the morning on 4 September 2014, 9 crewmembers were saved, lifted from a life raft aboard a Russian and foreign boats that had taken part in search-and-rescue operation. However, during the transportation to the shore, one of them – a second captain’s mate died. On 5 September 2014, during the search operation the rescuers found and recovered the dead body of the second victim – the chief mate.

At present investigators are looking into the circumstances and causes of the ship’s sinking. They are questioning the crewmembers transported to the city of Vladivostok. A procedural decision will be made following the check.
