In Tyumen Region preliminary investigation launched in death of biathlete during Russia Cup race

21-year-old master of biathlon sports, champion of Russian Biathlon Championship in 2013 and prize-winner in 2014 Alina Yakimkina competing for Udmurtia died on 21 February 2015, during a Russia Cup biathlon race in Tyumen Region.

Tyumen Region investigating bodies of the Russia’s Investigative Committee have launched a preliminary investigation. At present an investigative team is working at the site of the tragedy. An investigator is questioning athletes and doctors of the national team.

According to preliminary information Yakimkina had run about 15 km and was finishing her distance, when 700 meters before the finish she collapsed. She was delivered to a medical center in the shortest possible time, but despite the attempts to save her life, she died.

At present investigative operations necessary to find out all the circumstances of what happened are underway. A procedural decision will be made following the investigation.
