In Moscow, imam detained on suspicions of public justification of terrorism

The Moscow Directorate of the Investigative Committee is conducting an investigation against Makhmud Velitov. He is charged with a crime under Part 1 of Article 205.2 of the RF Penal Code (public justification of terrorism).

According to investigators, on 23 September 2013, Velitov, the chairman and at the same time imam at the time, delivered a public speech during a prayer in the mosque located on Khachaturyan Street in Moscow justifying the actions of a member of terrorist organization Khizb ut-Takhrir al-Islami. The Supreme Court of the Russian Federation had recognized the organization terrorist and prohibited it in Russia.

According to the result of a psychological and linguistics analysis the said speech contained a complex of psychological and lingual signs of justification of terrorism.

Today the investigators are going to ask a court to place Velitov under house arrest pending trial. The investigation is continued.
