In Saint Petersburg, probe launched into attempt on lives of law-enforcement agents

The Saint Petersburg Directorate of the Investigative Committee has launched an investigation into crimes under Article 317 (attempt on the life of a law-enforcement officer) and Article 222 of the RF Penal Code (illegal circulation of firearms, ammunition and explosives).

On 17 August 2016, at about 12 PM, officers of the Saint Petersburg and Leningrad Region Office of the Federal Security Service stormed a flat in a block of flats on Leninsky avenue to arrest individuals federally wanted on charges of membership in illegal armed units in Ciscaucasia. The said individuals fought back and opened fire. The officers killed all four of the accused. Nobody of the civilians or the officers was hurt.

The scene is now being examined by investigators and criminalists. Necessary investigative operations are underway to find out all the details of the crime, including identifying the killed. In addition, the objects confiscated from the crime scene will be processed for the evidence. The investigation is ongoing.
