Alexander Bastrykin congratulates member of Investigative Committee’s civic council Alexander Sukharev on 93th birthday

Alexander Bastrykin has today congratulated member of the Civic Council under the RF Investigative Committee, President of the interregional NGO Outstanding Military and Naval Commanders of the Fatherland, state councilor of justice Alecander Y. Sukharev on his 93th birthday.

Deputy Minister of Justice Alu Alkhanov, First Deputy Head of the Military Academy of the RF Armed Forces, General Staff Viktor Barynkin, Chancellor of the All-Russian State University of Justice Olga Aleksandrova, Director of the Alexander Nevsky Cadet School of the Investigative Committee, Hero of the Soviet Union Igor Zaporozhan, Head of the Investigative Committee’s Department for Education, Hero of the Russian Federation Sergei Petrov, Chairman of the Presidium of the National association of investigation veterans’ NGOs The Union of Investigation Veterans Vladimir Dontsov, senior officials and employees of the Investigative Committee’s Moscow Directorate, cadets and Mr. Sukharev’s relatives gathered at the Investigative Committee’s Moscow Directorate to congratulate him.

Mr. Bastrykin noted Mr. Sukharev’s special contribution to the activity of the Investigative Committee as an honorary member of the Civil Council and a member of the recently set up Council of Heroes. The Chairman of the Investigative Committee shared his impressions from his first meeting with Mr. Sukharev, talked about the time when the latter was the USSR Prosecutor General and about their joint work. Mr. Bastrykin reminded the present that Mr. Sukharev was the author of more than 200 scientific papers and awarded him a diploma of an honorary professor of the RF Investigative Committee’s Academy pointing out his role in its establishment.

Mr. Sukharev is a veteran of the Great Patriotic War. After graduating from school he joined the Voronezh Military Communication School. In December 1941, the young lieutenant became a commanding officer of a communications platoon. He fought on different frontlines for more than two and a half years. Mr. Sukharev went all the way from Moscow to Vistula, commanded a platoon, a company, became the chief of communications regiment and commander of the regiment’s staff. In September 1944, he was badly wounded while forcing a crossing over the Narew River in Poland. A demobilized officer, he took up educational work among young people and took part in the Nuremberg trials. In 1950, he graduated from the All-Soviet Union Law Institute for postal tuition and dedicated his life to legal work. In September 1970, Mr. Sukharev was appointed the First Deputy Minister of Justice of the USSR and in 1984 became the Minister of Justice of the RSFSR. Between May 1988 and October 1990, he was the Prosecutor General of the USSR. In addition to high professional achievements Mr. Sukharev is an active scientist. He wrote the book Our People’s Court, scientific papers on fighting crime and building sense of justice in people, was editor in chief of the Russian Law Encyclopedia published in 1999, and took part in the project of the RF Criminal Procedure Code and development of other fundamental regulations in the area of fighting crime and protection of citizens’ rights.

A film featuring Mr. Sukharev’s services to the country, his career achievements, extensive activity in educating young people, which he is still involved into, the activity of the interregional NGO Outstanding Military and Naval Commanders countering attempts to falsify the history of the Great Patriotic War 1941-1945 damaging interests of our country, was demonstrated at the celebration. In addition, cadets of the Alexander Nevsky Cadet School of the Investigative Committee and students of children’s musical school No 96 performed and expressed their respect for Mr. Sukharev. They sand and played patriotic songs loved by everybody. At the end of the celebration Mr. Bastrykin and other guests once more congratulated Mr. Sukharev and gave him presents.
