In Tatarstan, suspects of death of child in swimming pool detained

The Tatarstan Office of the Investigative Committee is looking into a crime under Part 2, item “c” of Article 238 of the RF Penal Code (provision of services that do not meet safety standards and have entailed death of a person by negligence) following the death of an 11-year-old girl in Afina Sports and Recreation Center in the town of Naberezhnye Chelny and has detained Olesya Shadrina, 34, an administrator of the said facility and founder, deputy business development director Natalia Mavrenkova, 53.

The victim came to the swimming pool for the first time with her friend on 19 November. While swimming, the friend saw that the girl was nowhere around and reported to an instructor. Investigators have found out that the instructor was a 16-year-old boy unofficially employed since 13 November 2016.

The investigators have also revealed that on the day of tragedy Shadrina suggested that Mavrenkina closed the swimming pool as there were no qualified instructors there, however the latter woman turned the suggestion down anxious that she might lose money. They eventually decided to make the teenager an instructor. Additionally, the investigators have learnt that Shadrina violated the internal safety code of the facility when she let the two girls into the swimming pool unaccompanied by adults.

While being interrogated, the two women pleaded guilty. They are now expecting a restraint. Investigative operations are underway to find out all the circumstances surrounding the crime. The investigation is ongoing.
