In Omsk, probe launched in death of teenager during basketball competition

A 16-year-old boy felt unwell at the awarding ceremony of a basketball competition at about 1:30 PM, 5 November 2016 at a school in the settlement of Krasnoyarka. He later died in a hospital. The Omsk Region Office of the Investigative Committee has opened an investigation in negligence under Part 2 of Article 293 of the RF Penal Code.

According to investigators, the boy died of a congenital heart disease. The boy’s parents said that they had learnt about the disease just recently and they had an appointment at a cardiology hospital scheduled on 17 November. Before that their son had done judo, but he had not been allowed to take part in competitions since 2013 because of heart problems, however, there were no contra-indications against PE at school.

The basketball competition among schools of Omsk municipal district were organized by the district’s Education Committee. During the awarding ceremony the boy felt unwell and the school nurse tried to render him first medical aid. Right after that the boy’s father transported him to a hospital in Krasnoyarka, but the doctors could not save the boy and pronounced him dead at 2 PM.

The investigators believe that the cause of the incident was improper organization of the competition by the officials of the Education Committee, who had failed to arrange for an emergency medical team to have been present at the competition.

At present the investigators have seized medical papers, are questioning eye-witnesses and soon they are going to assign a forensic medical examination which will show not only the cause of death, but if the boy received well-timed, adequate and thorough medical aid. The investigation will find those responsible for the crime.
