In Smolensk Region, investigators look into attack on firefighters and murder of two people

The Smolensk Region Office of the Investigative Committee has opened an investigation against a 50-year-old resident of the settlement of Olsha, Smolensk Region suspected of crimes under Part 2 of Article 105 and part 1 of Article 222 of the RF Penal Code (murder of two or more people and illegal purchase, storage and carrying of firearms).

According to investigators, on 14 December about 6 PM, the police got a report from firefighters that when they had arrived at a fire scene in the settlement of Olsha they were shot at. 1 employee of the Emergency Ministry and 2 firefighters were wounded. Wounded employee of the Emergency Ministry got medical aid and was discharged, while the two wounded firefighters are now in hospital in satisfactory condition.

As was preliminarily established, the man who is and ex-con, had set his house and the house of his neighbor on fire. He had a Kalashnikov sub-machine gun on him and killed the owner of the house and a passer-by. Upon being held the man was trying to kill himself from his gun. An emergency medical team delivered him to a hospital where he later died.

Dead bodies of two women, presumably mothers of the suspect and his neighbor were found on the fire scene.

At present, investigators are examining the crime scene, questioning witnesses and are looking into all the circumstances and reasons for the crime.
