Probe launched in murder of Russian ambassador to Turkey

The Major Cases Directorate of the RF Investigative Committee has opened an investigation in an act of international terrorist entailing killing of a person under Part 3 of Article 361 of the RF Penal Code after the murder of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to Turkey Andrei Karlov.

On 19 December, an unknown man opened fire at art exhibition Russia as it is viewed by the Turkish people in Turkish capital city and fatally wounded Russian Ambassador Andrei Karlov.

The footage of the incident gives investigators grounds to think that the actions of and statements made by the attacker have to do with his attitude to the position  the Russian Federation holds against international terrorism.

The norm provided by Article 361 of the RF Penal Code was introduced in Russian laws as part of so-called “Yarovaya’s antiterrorist norms” which increases liability for acts of terrorist and basically are the implementation of the international law against different kinds of groups and individuals using different means, including acts of terrorism, to achieve their goals.

In accordance with Russian criminal procedure laws and international law investigative operations will be conducted to identify those involved in the attack on the Russian diplomat. Those operations include sending requests on legal assistance to Turkish competent bodies.
