A Criminal Case Has Been Initiated on the Fact of Desecration of a Monument to Soviet Soldiers in Athens

The Main Investigative Department of the IC of Russia has initiated a criminal case on the grounds of a crime under Paragraphs a, b, Part 2, Article 243.4 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (destruction or damage to military monuments perpetuating the memory of those who died defending the Fatherland).

According to the investigation, no later than March 19, at Syngrou Avenue in Athens, Greece, attackers damaged a monument to Soviet soldiers who had died for the freedom and independence of Greece under World War II during the liberation of the country from Nazi invaders. An insulting inscription with the name of a Ukrainian nationalist battalion, as well as a neo-Nazi symbol, was painted on the monument.

These actions are directed against the interests of Russia in the field of preserving the historical memory of the activities of the USSR during World War II and the decisive role in the victory over fascism.

An international request for legal assistance is being prepared as part of the criminal case in accordance with the applicable laws.
