In Republic of Dagestan criminal case opened into attack on the employee of the Investigative Committee

On 14 October 2012, at 11 p.m., near no. 5 in Dzerzhinsky pereulok in Kaspiysk two unknown masked persons fired from an automatic gun at the Acting Head of 3rd Department for investigating especially important cases of the Dagestan Republic Investigations Directorate of the Russia’s Investigative Committee Major of Justice Nurlan Ashurbekov who was driving up to the house. Ashurbekov was hospitalized with a wound to his arm. The attackers fled on a white Lada Priora car.

The Republic of Dagestan investigating bodies of the Russia’s Investigative Committee have initiated a criminal case over signs of crimes under article 295 (Encroachment on the life of a person conducting a preliminary inquest) and part 2 of article 222 of the RF Criminal Code (illegal handling of firearms).

The investigators are considering Ashurbekov’s professional activity as the priority version of the attack. His department is engaged in investigating the most high-profile cases of terrorist attacks and extremist crimes, including the case over a murder of a famous religious figure Said Afandy Atsayev (Cherkessky) committed in August 2012.

From the moment the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation was created, its investigators were repeatedly threatened because of their principled position in investigating criminal cases and those threats are growing more frequent to be implemented. In spite of the danger our investigators are exposed to in their daily work, they continue to honestly and professionally discharge their duties, to fight crimes. The Investigative Committee will make every effort to solve this crime as quickly as possible, to establish and cite the persons involved in its organizations and commission.
