Investigators carried out detailed examination of the sunken Kolslaya oil rig

Far Eastern Investigations Directorate of the Russia’s investigative Committee continues investigating a criminal case opened over 18 December 2011 wreckage of Kolslaya jack-up floating drilling rig in the Sea of Okhotsk on the signs of a crime under part 3 of article 263 of the RF Criminal Code (violation of the rules for traffic safety and operation of sea transport entailing by negligence the death of two or more persons).

On 30 September current year, a survey craft Kendrik discovered Kolskaya drilling rig more than a kilometer deep in the Sea of Okhotsk. At the same time the unique capacity tests were carried out for a deep-diving vehicle Triton which can examine the objects up to 3 kilometers deep underwater and the first pictures were received.

After that, on the initiative of the investigators, as part of the investigation the specialists started preparing for the detailed examination of the rig’s hull. On 10 October 2012, the vessel Kendrik with two unique Triton deep-diving vehicles and an expeditionary group left for the place where the rig had gone down. With the help of the latest vehicle and specialists, who by the way had participated in lifting Kursk atomic submarine, the investigators today have completed the examination of the rig.

The received pictures and videos require a careful analysis and accordingly are forwarded to the experts for technical navigation forensic examination. Based on its results the investigators are going to establish the reasons of the rig’s wreckage, killed more than 50 people and to give a legal treatment to the persons responsible for safety of its operation.
