In Republic of Tatarstan criminal proceedings launched over encroachment on life of a law enforcement officer

The Republic of Tatarstan investigating bodies of the Russia’s Investigative Committee have initiated a criminal case over crimes under article 317 (encroachment on life a law enforcement officer) and part 2 of article 222 of the RF Criminal Code (illegal acquisition, transfer, sale, storage, transportation, or bearing of firearms, its basic parts, ammunition, explosives, or explosive devices committed by an organized group under a preliminary conspiracy).

According to investigators, on 24 October 2012, during an attempt of the Federal Security Service (FSB) officers to hold one of the supposed criminals who was trying to get into the first section of No. 25 in Khimikov Street in Kazan, the latter offered active armed resistance and detonated an unknown explosive device (probably a hand grenade). As a result a 28-year0old man, later identified as Ruslan Kashalov died on the spot. One of the FSB officers was also killed. After that the security forces decided to storm the building where presumably a second criminal was hiding. In addition, a 35-year-old man was killed during the operation, and was later was identified as internationally wanted Robert Valeyev.

On 25 October 2012, this criminal case was filed into a single lawsuit with a criminal case opened on 19 July 2012 over a terrorist attack, attempted murder of mufti of the Muslim Religious Office of the Tatarstan Republic and murder of his Deputy.

At present investigating operations are underway to establish all the circumstances of the crime, witnesses are being interrogated, a number of forensic expert examinations are assigned.
