Criminal proceedings launched in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky into a traffic accident hurting 11 people

Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky Garrison Military Investigations Department of the Russia’s Investigative Committee has launched criminal proceedings against Junior Sergeant Sergey Batenev under contract military service in military unit 10103. He is suspected of a crime under part 2 of article 264 of the RF Criminal Code (violation of rules for traffic safety and operation of motor vehicle committed in alcoholic intoxication involving by negligence grave injury to human health).

According to investigators, today around 6:50 a.m., local time, Batenev in heavy snowfall driving his personal car Toyota Chaser, lost control of his car and ran over 11 people, including 2 children born in 2006 and 2008, standing next to the Krasnaya Sopka bus stop. As the result of the traffic accident one of the pedestrians suffered a fracture of his right thigh, another one – open craniocerebral trauma and fracture of skull base. Both of them were delivered to hospital. The rest sustained different injuries and were delivered to traumatology department to get first medical aid.

At present the service man is being questioned. Medical examination showed presence of alcohol in his blood. Investigators have filed a motion to place the suspect into custody as a pretrial restraining measure. Medical forensic expert examinations have been assigned to establish the gravity of injuries inflicted on the victims. The Batenev’s car has been placed at a protected parking lot to be examined in detail. Investigation is to be continued.
