In Vladimir Region criminal case over traffic accident involving legislative assembly deputy car accepted for investigation by regional investigative office

The Vladimir Region investigating bodies of the Russia’s Investigative Committee have accepted for investigation a criminal case opened into a traffic accident in Kovrov District killing a 62-year-old local resident (part 3 of article 264 of the RF Penal Code).

According to investigators, on 18 May 2014, about 11:50 PM, in the village of Melekhovo and unidentified driver in a Range Rover violated traffic code, drove out to the wrong side of the road and collided with a VAZ-11113 Oka steered by a local resident. The Oka driver was killed on the spot as a result of the injuries suffered in the accident. After the accident the driver of Range Rover left the car and fled the scene.

During the investigation it has been established that the Range Rover belongs to deputy of the regional legislative assembly Sergey Kuryshev, whose relatives reported the car stolen at might of 18 May 2014. The car thieves used force to get the car from the deputy. In the morning of 19 May the deputy confirmed the information and made a formal appeal to the law enforcement bodies.

Considering a wide public reaction and circumstances of the crime committed using the car of the deputy, who enjoys special legal status, the criminal case has been passed into the regional investigations directorate for investigation and to identify the person responsible for the crime. Investigating and search operations are underway and analyses have been set up on the evidence seized from the accident scene. The investigation is ongoing.
