Officials of the Astrakhan Region Investigations Directorate of the Russia’s Investigative Committee have taken part in the district meeting of children’s rights commissioners bringing together children’s ombudsmen from thirty subjects of the Southern and North Caucasus Federal Districts. The opening ceremony was attended by Pavel Astakhov, the Children’s Rights Commissioner for the President of the Russian Federation.
The main objective of the enlarged meeting was to discuss problems of state family policy, to exchange experience between agencies of the subjects of the Southern and North Caucasus Federal Districts and to work jointly for further cooperation between the regions in consolidating family relations.
The Astrakhan Region Investigations Directorate pays prioritized attention to protection of children’s rights and interests resulting in the reduced number of crimes committed against minors: over 3 months of 2014 19 children have been recognized victims (40 – over 3 months in 2013), the number of criminal cases opened over sex crimes against children and teenagers has decreased by third (26 facts in 2014 against 40 in 2013). The Investigations Directorate pays special attention to preventing such crimes.
Work is continued under a trilateral agreement concluded in 2012 with the human rights and children rights commissioners for the Astrakhan Region in constant monitoring and exchange of information in order to respond timely to the reports on crimes against children. A booklet made by the Investigative Committee “If your child is in danger” was highly appreciated by Children’s Ombudsman Mr. Astakhov.
The Investigations Directorate also pays a lot of attention to charity, assisting not only to children’s homes or Sunday school, but to families as well.
At the opening ceremony Mr. Astakhov presented the representatives of the Directorate with a letter of commendation addressed to the Head of the Astrakhan Region Investigations Directorate “For high degree of professionalism, active position in life, integrity and responsible attitude in protecting rights and interests of children and families having minors in the Astrakhan Region”.
