Investigators in Sverdlovsk Region receive first results of molecular and DNA examinations for identification of victims in AN-2 crash

Investigating bodies of the Urals Transport Investigations Directorate of the Russia’s Investigative Committee continue a criminal investigation into the crash of An-2 in June 2012 with passengers aboard containing signs of a crime under part 3 of article 263 of the RF Criminal Code (violation of traffic safety rules and operation of an aircraft inflicting through negligence death of two or more people).

Today investigators have received first results of medical expert examinations to identify the killed, whose bodies were found at the An-2 crash scene within 8 km off the airstrip in the city of Serov. The examination allowed concluding that there are 10 men and 3 women among bone remains of 13 people.

The investigators have recognized 11 people victims due to the death of their relatives. At present the results of molecular and DNA expert examinations made with the DNA samples taken from the relatives of the missing passengers and the captain of the aircraft have allowed identifying 2 bodies. They are Maxim Mayevsky, born in 1988 and his sister Oksana, born in 1989 from Serov. Today the remains will be transported in Serov.

In addition, investigators seized more than 20 pieces of jewelry from the crash scene and showed them to the relatives for identification. The results of identification of these pieces of jewelry allowed investigators to find that they had possibly belonged to 8 people from those aboard.

As the main versions of the accident the investigators are still considering technical fault of the aircraft and the pilot’s mistake. The conclusions on the causes of the crash will be made based on the results of aviation and technical expert examination taking into account conclusions of specialists if Interstate Aviation Committee. Investigation is ongoing.
