Ukrainian Nadezhda Savchenko charged with complicity in killing Russian journalists brought in for psychiatric tests

The Main Investigations Directorate of the Russia’s Investigative Committee continues investigating a criminal case against Nadezhda Savchenko charged with a crime under part 5 of article 33, paragraphs “a”, “b”, “f”, “g” and “k” of part 2 of article 105 (complicity in murder of two or more people in connection with their professional activity by a generally dangerous way motivated by political hate committed by a group of people).

As it has been reported earlier, according to investigators Savchenko joined the Aidar battalion in June during an armed conflict near Luhansk. She found out the coordinates of a group of Russian VGTRK journalists and other civilians near Luhansk and passed them to militants. Later the coordinates were shelled killing Igor Kornelyuk and Anton Voloshin of VGTRK.

In view of the seriousness of the charges an in-patient psychiatric evaluation has been fixed for Savchenko and she has been brought at a facility in Moscow to undergo the tests. The accused and her lawyer were notified in due order. The medical personnel are going to determine mental state of the accused and give their conclusion to the investigators. The accused and her lawyer will see the conclusion as well. The main aim of the evaluation is to determine whether Savchenko is sane and has legal capacity. Under Russian laws, such tests are a standard procedure for the individuals, who was directly involved in military actions and persons accused of very serious crimes punishable by death penalty or life imprisonment. This way, this is a regular practice for investigative operations.

I am pointing out that complaints of Savchenko and her lawyer filed with Basmanny court in Moscow protesting against the in-patient psychiatric evaluation do not suspend the execution of the warrant in accordance with the RF Criminal Procedure Code.
