In Sakhalin Region criminal investigation launched in death of young woman at hospital

On 21 November 2014, one of news outlets published an article entitled “Relatives of a 24-year-old girl from Voronezh blame doctors of Tymovskoye Central District Hospital for her death”. The Sakhalin Region investigating bodies of the Russia’s Investigative Committee organized a check into it and later launched a criminal investigation into a crime under part 2 of article 109 of the RF Penal Code (reckless homicide).

According to investigators, on 31 October 2014, the young woman came to the hospital complaining about sore throat and a fever. After the examination the doctors diagnosed her with acute double-sided tonsillitis and prescribed out-patient treatment. On 4 November 2014, the girl felt worse and came to Tymovskoye Central District Hospital. After the examination she was taken to the contagious isolation ward. On 6 November she felt still worse and was taken to the intensive care. On 7 November she went into coma. In the evening of 9 November, a helicopter airlifted the girl to Sakhalin Regional Hospital, where she died the next day.

At present investigative operations are underway to find out all the circumstances of the incident. Medical documents have been confiscated and are being studied. The investigators are identifying persons responsible for the girl’s death. They are looking at the cause of death and looking for the defects in her treatment.
