In Chelyabinsk Region 18 participants of riots in Kopeysk correctional facility to stand trial

18 convicts are being prosecuted for crimes under parts 1 and 2 of article 212 of the RF Penal Code (organization and participation in mass riots), part 1 of article 321 (disorganization of the activity of institutions ensuring isolation from society), parts 1 and 2 of article 318 (use of force against a representative of the authority).

It has been revealed that by their culpable actions the participants of mass riots wanted to remove the administration of the facility from management and to ensure the rule of criminals in the facility. They also wanted to drink alcohol, use mobile communication services, Internet, intimate services and get other benefits not allowed by the criminal penitentiary laws.

The convicts and their accomplices outside the facility had prepared the crime for several months in secrecy. During the said time they had involved ate least 150 people from their relatives, friends and acquaintances of the convicts and over a thousand convicts of correctional facility No 6.

To ensure free access of the relatives, friends and acquaintances involved in the riots in the facility, the convicts picked the Open Day 24 November 2012 to organize the riots.

During the mass riots 13 police officers and civilians were injured and the facility suffered pecuniary damage of over 250 thousand rubles.

During the probe over 280 witnesses were questioned, several dozens of forensic expert examinations were run. There are 130 volumes of criminal records.

The Deputy Prosecutor-General of the Russian Federation has approved the indictment and the case has been sent to Chelyabinsk Region Court to be tried on the merits.
