In Chechnya five gangsters found guilty of 1999 attempt on the life of soldiers

A court has recognized the evidence gathered by the North Caucasus Federal District Main Investigations Directorate of the Russia’s Investigative Committee sufficient to convict Rezvan Mulasanov, Bagaudin Kuvanayev, Arslan Taushev, Rasul Kozhmanbetov and Rashid Atuov. Depending on the role of each one they were found guilty of crimes under part 2 of article 209 and article 317 of the RF Penal Code (membership in a stable armed group (gang) and in attacks committed by it, attempt on the life of military servants).

The court and investigators have found that on 4 October 1999, near the village Chervlyonnaya, Shelkovskaya District in Chechnya Mulasanov, Kuvanayev, Taushev, Kozhmanbetov and Atuov being members of a group that was part of a united gang led by Khattab committed an armed assault on the soldiers of military unit 34605 of the Russian Ministry of Defense, who were on a mission of revealing and disarming illegal armed units or gangs as part of the United Team of Troops for counter-terrorist operations in Ciscaucasia. 15 soldiers were killed and 28 more were injured as a result of concentrated aimed fire conducted by the gangsters with the accused among them.

The court sentenced Mulasanov, Kuvanayev, Taushev, Kozhmanbetov to 8 years to be served in a maximum-security penal colony and Atuov to 15 years to be served in a maximum-security penal colony.

The investigation against other gangsters is ongoing.
