Art-smuggling investigation opened in Moscow

Moscow Main Investigations Directorate of the Russia’s Investigative Committee has launched a criminal investigation against head of the territorial election commission of Lomonosov district of Moscow suspected of a crime under part 1 of article 226 of the RF Penal Code (contraband art smuggling).

According to investigators, on 29 April 2015, a 33-year-old man at the customs check at Vnukovo airport declared that he was carrying 5 paintings with a total value of 180 thousand rubles transfer of which outside the Eurasian Economic Community countries was prohibited or restricted. The information the suspect gave about the value of the paintings was false. The paintings were really worth at least 1 million 900 thousand rubles.

At present the investigators are searching the expert office of the State Tretyakov Gallery. They are going to bring charges against the suspect. The investigation is ongoing.
