In Moscow investigation opened in extortion on very large scale by officials of pretrial prison

The investigating bodies of Moscow Main Investigations Directorate of the Russia’s Investigative Committee have launched a criminal investigation in a crime under article 163 of the RF Penal Code (extortion).

According to investigators, officials of pretrial prison No 1 of Moscow Office of the Federal Penitentiary Service conspired with an underworld leader, confined in the said facility, to extort money from arrestees for economic crimes. To do that they threatened the victims with physical violence and that they would make the condition intolerable and demanded to give them over 10 million rubles by transferring it to bank cards which had been registered in the names of their accomplices. The crime was prevented thanks to joint operation of the officials of the Moscow Main Investigations Directorate, operatives of the Federal Security Service and internal security of the Federal Penitentiary Service.

The facility and the suspects’ residences have been searched.

Three officials of the facility and two former workers have been detained. Charges will be brought and restraint chosen soon. The investigation is ongoing.
