In Moscow officials of pretrial prison charged with grand extortion remanded in custody

The investigating bodies of Moscow Main Investigations Directorate of the Russia’s Investigative Committee continue investigating a criminal case opened over a crime under article 163 of the RF Penal Code (extortion).

The members of the criminal group have been charged and remanded in custody.

It has been reported earlier that officials of pretrial prison No 1 of Moscow Office of the Federal Penitentiary Service conspired with an underworld leader, confined in the said facility, to extort money from arrestees for economic crimes. To do that they threatened the victims with physical violence and that they would make the condition intolerable and demanded to give them over 10 million rubles by transferring it to bank cards which had been registered in the names of their accomplices. The crime was prevented thanks to joint operation of the officials of the Moscow Main Investigations Directorate, operatives of the Federal Security Service and internal security of the Federal Penitentiary Service.

Searches were conducted in the pretrial prison and residences of the accused. The investigation is ongoing.
