Cadets of the Alexander Nevsky Cadet School of the Investigative Committee have taken part in the selection for the IX Russian Youth Expedition “Ski to the North Pole!”
Five cadets of the Alexander Nevsky Cadet School passed the first stage and went to Karelia to join a group of 40 teenagers from 13 regions of Russia to participate in a practice session at the Bolshoye Priklyucheniye (A Great Adventure) children’s tourist camp.
One of the winners of the main selection stage has become 10-grade cadet of the Alexander Nevsky Cadet School of the Investigative Committee Aleksei Kopachev. Now he is going to join a team of three more boys and three girls to become the participant of the traditional Arctic adventure, when 7 Russian teenagers aged between 16 and 18 have to ski 110 km on drift ice from Barneo station to the North Pole. The expedition will be headed by famous polar explorer Matvei Shparo. Once on the top of the world, the teenagers will raise flags of Russia, their regions, schools, cadet schools, colleges and universities. The expedition is held jointly with the Federal Children and Youth Tourism and Local History Center of the Russian Ministry of Education and Science.
The members of the team were selected following the results they demonstrated during the training session held in early March. The criterion for the all-round grade for each of the candidates was how well their training matched the level of physical and psychological stress characteristic of an extreme Arctic expedition.
The expedition will start from Moscow between 9 and 12 April. Before the flight the young polar explorers will have another training – swimming in full Arctic gear in the Bolshoi Stroginsky Backwater, where rescuers of the Russian Ministry for Emergency Situations will create an improvised Arctic Ocean.
