In Volgograd, killers of Great Patriotic War veteran jailed

A court has recognized the evidence gathered by the Volgograd Region Office of the Investigative Committee sufficient to convict 44-year-old local resident Yelena Shturkina and her 52-year-old cohabiter Oleg Strazhev. They were found guilty of a crime under Part 2, items “c”, “g” and “j” of Article 105 of the RF Penal Code (murder of persons in helpless state committed by a group of people in a previous collusion in order to hide another crime). Shturkina’s actions were also classified as a crime under Part 1 of Article 160 of the RF Penal Code (misappropriation).

The court and investigators have revealed that the woman worked in one of commercial social centers in the city of Volgograd. On 7 May 2015, she was sent to look after an 88-year-old veteran of the Great Patriotic War. In the morning, she took over another attendant and got from her 7.6 thousand rubles to buy food for the elderly client. The woman then called her cohabiter and invited him to the veteran’s flat. During the whole day they had been drinking alcohol bought on the money of the elderly men next room and did not pay any attention to him. During the party the woman offered her guest to steal all the elderly man’s savings. The man refused and them Shturkina searched through the room by herself. While she was doing it, the elderly man woke up. To conceal the crime they were about to commit, the attendant and the man attacked the elderly man, who was not able to fight them back, and started hitting him. They then put a towel around his neck and strangled him.

The court has sentenced Shturkina to 13 years 1 month in a minimum-security penal colony and subsequent limitation of liberty for 2 years. Strazhev got 18 years in a special-security penal colony and further limitation of liberty for 2 years.
