Alexander Bastrykin congratulates Leonid Roshal on anniversary of Emergency Children’s Surgery and Traumatology Research Institute

Chairman of the RF Investigative Committee Alexander Bastrykin has attended today a celebration of the 120th anniversary of the Emergency Children’s Surgery and Traumatology Research Institute headed by the World Children’s Doctor Leonid Roshal.

Congratulating the senior officials and the staff of the Institute Mr. Bastrykin said that “the Investigative is also celebrating a holiday today – the Forensic Expert Day of the Russian Federation and this is very symbolic. We are united by the fact that we deal with evil, crimes and their impact. However, the entire history of your Institute’s operation says that this evil is countered by humanity, a lot of kindness and self-sacrifice of medical personnel.” Mr. Bastrykin gave Dr. Roshal the title of an honorary professor of the RF Investigative Committee Academy and expressed hope that Dr. Roshal while visiting future investigators would be able to teach them the kindness, sympathy, caring and mercy he himself had in abundance. Some of honorable Institute staff members got presents from the Investigative Committee.

The Investigative Committee has been collaborating with the Institute for a long time for charity. Thanks to charity foundations instituted by Dr. Roshal, donations, including those from Investigative Committee staff, specialists of the Institute have managed to work a lot of miracles, to save lives and treat many children.

One example of the Committee and Institute fighting together for life of a child is the story of Pavel Arkhipov. In 2012, eight-year-old Pavel became disabled after an unsuccessful surgery in a clinical hospital in Novgorod Region. The boy went into a coma and Mr. Bastrykin assumed personal control over the investigation into the case. The doctors guilty of disabling the boy were prosecuted. However, even after the investigation had been finished, senior official of the Investigative Committee’s central office as well as the staff of the regional investigative authority cared for Pavel. With assistance from the staff of the Investigative Committee the local authorities gave the Arkhipovs a comfortable flat on the first floor in a brock-wall building. The investigators visit the parents regularly and ask about Pavel’s health and if they have all necessary medicines. Mr. Bastrykin’s position remained unchanged from the very beginning of this situation – “if there is only 1 5 out of 100 that he may get better, we must use it.” Later, the investigators transported Pavel to a hospital of the Federal Medical Biological Agency in the city of Saint Petersburg and then to the Emergency Children’s Surgery and Traumatology in Moscow where he is now getting all possible highly-qualified aid. Mr. Bastrykin has visited Pavel today in his ward. The Chairman asked doctors about the progress of treatment and recent results. He also talked to the boy’s parents and gave Pavel some presents.

By joined efforts the Institute has provided the best medical aid to Ivan Voronov who lost his brother and suffered severe missile wounds. At present Ivan is kept being treated. He lives fast and is friends with cadets of the Alexander Nevsky Cadet School of the Investigative Committee which he plans to join.

The Investigative Committee regularly participates not only in raising money for sick and injured children, but organizes and holds some charity events with assistance of Dr. Roshal’s charity foundations.

In addition, joint work is done by the Investigative Committee’s Coordination Council to help children from southeastern Ukraine. Being a member of the Council, Dr. Roshal thanks to his enormous experience helps to handle some issues related to helping the children affected by military actions.

Protection of children’s interest has been one of priorities for the Investigative Committee since the moment it was set up. This is why the joint work for helping children in need of support will be continued.
