Following Alexander Bastrykin’s orders experienced investigators of Investigative Committee’s Central Office join probe into Mi-8 helicopter crash

Following the order of Chairman of the RF Investigative Committee Alexander Bastrykin, a team of experienced criminalists of the Investigative Committee’s Central Office has taken off for Yamal peninsula to provide methodological and practical assistance in the investigation at the Mil Mi-8 helicopter crash scene and to carry out other urgent investigative operations.

As became known earlier, a Mil Mi-8 helicopter operated by Skol airlines on route from Suzun oil field in Krasnoyarsk Territory to the settlement of Urengoi, Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Area crashed from about 7 to 8 ON, local time, 21 October 2016 in Purovsky District, Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Area. There were 22 people onboard: 3 crew and 19 passengers. According to preliminary information, 19 people died on the scene of multiple injuries, three were taken to Novourengoi town hospital. The helicopter was destroyed. The Ural Transport Office of the Investigative Committee has opened a criminal investigation into a crime under Part 3 of Article 263 of the RF Penal Code (violation of safety standards for traffic and operation of an aircraft involving death of two or more people by negligence).

The investigators are now considering 3 versions of the crash: violation of aircraft operation and flight safety codes, technical failure, bad weather. Not one of those versions has been given a priority yet.

The team of forensic investigators keeps on working at the crash scene carrying out urgent investigative operations to find out all the details of the tragedy. The investigation is ongoing.
