In Moscow Region, investigators prevent suicides of two teenagers urged to kill themselves via social media

The Moscow Region Directorate of the Investigative Committee has opened an investigation in suicide solicitation under Article 110 of the RF Penal Code after attempted suicides of 14-year-old and 15-year-old girls.

Since 28 January 2017 both girls have been chatting in social media with unidentified persons who used psychological pressure to give them dangerous tasks with the ultimate aim of killing themselves. On 1 February 2017, the girls decided to take their own lives, but their attempt was prevented by police. They had learned that the girls were going to make a fatal step from a report received from activists in Krasnodar Territory fighting so called groups of death.

At present, a set of investigative and search operations are underway to identify persons involved in the crime. Girl’s classmates, teachers and acquaintances are being interrogated.

In addition, the Moscow Region Directorate of the Investigative Committee has initiated joint meetings with administrations of districts, school principals and law enforcers to discuss problems connected with groups of death, to come up with methods of influencing and preventing such incidents. The efficiency of such meetings is evident. It was thanks to timely prevention and attention of the public that the suicide of a 16-year-old was prevented in the city of Krasnoyarsk. The investigative Committee will keep up with that work and will accept any help from citizens who have any information on  teens or children being enticed to commit suicides via social media.
