Investigators and other law-enforcers hold man for killing 14-year-old girl in September 2011 in Yekaterinburg

The Sverdlovsk Region Office of the Investigative Committee continues investigating a murder of a 14-year-old girl whose body with signs of violent death was found at about 8:20 AM on 18 September 2011 at the school stadium near No 25 in Belorechenskaya Street in the city of Yekaterinburg.

Despite initial investigative operations, investigators could not solve the crime on hot scent as there were no witnesses. Never the less the regional law-enforcement authorities continued minute work to identify the suspect.

An investigative team of the most experienced investigators and criminalists, operatives of the Sverdlovsk Region Directorate of the Interior Ministry and the Yekaterinburg police department was created to conduct an efficient investigation.

The investigation is under special control of the Chairman of the Investigative Committee.

The investigators were able to restore the timeline of the girl’s last few days, they learnt about her lifestyle and identified her acquaintances. They got and analyzed huge amounts of electronic information and data on persons convicted for similar crimes or registered with psychiatric institutions. The investigators checked all the houses in the area surrounding the crime scene.

The crime was committed in a public place at night and then it rained, so there was not much evidence left for the investigators. However, thanks to their efficient work and new forensic methods they managed to get some samples which can help identify the murderer.

For a several years the investigators and criminalists together with police agents did their best to solve the crime.

The amount and intensity of the work done can be seen from the numbers: the investigators have questioned more than 4.5 thousand people, checked more than 7 thousand people by coming to their flats, ran over 1 thousand different expert examinations (including forensic medical, DNA, information analytical and chemical ones). They conducted searches and other operation to solve the murder: they studied more than 3 thousand documents and analyzed billing data containing more than 3 million cell phone connections. With assistance from the Investigative Committee’s Forensics Directorate, they gathered data on dozens of similar crimes committed across Russia and remained unsolved and each serial criminal was checked on having been involved in that murder. In different times, more than 100 law-enforcers joined to run both checks in the flats of certain people and mass house rounds.

All those steps gave results, as going through the information and data on persons of interests, the investigators and operatives managed to solve a number of other crimes. They revealed that the girl from the same school where the murder took place was sexually abused, and by now the perpetrator has been convicted and is now serving in prison.

Eventually, as a logical result of the work done, one of the samples matched the DNA found on the girl’s body.

The suspect was detained by the investigators and police operatives on 10 May 2017. The suspect is a local resident 48 years of age, a self-employed electrician with no previous convictions.

The investigators assume that the suspect raped the 14-year-old girl on the night of 18 September 2011 at the school stadium, killed her and then fled. Some passersby found the body at about 8:20 AM.

The man has been charged with rape of a minor under Part 3, item “a” of Article 131 and rape-related murder under Part 2, item “j” of Article 105 of the RF Penal Code. The accused is looking at a life sentence.

At present the accused is being interrogated to find the true motives of the crimes.

Today a court has agreed with the investigators’ arguments and ruled to place the man in custody pending trial. The man is going to be evaluated to determine if he is sane or has any kinds of mental disorders.
