Progress of probe launched in Chelyabinsk Region in death of local residents, including children, whose bodies recovered from lake

Dead bodies of 2 men, a 10-year-old girl and 2-year-old boy were recovered from Lake Maksimka, Chesma District (near the settlement of Chesma) on the evening of 2 July 2017.

The Chelyabinsk Region Office of the Investigative Committee has opened an investigation in negligent homicide of 2 or more people under Article 109 of the RF Criminal Code. According to preliminary information, a man and his children and his relatives’ children (9 people) were sailing a boat and turned over. Two men swam from the bank to save them, but drowned.

Bodies of 8-year-old and 15-year-old boys have been found later during a search operation. It is known that 4 of the children survived.

Investigative and search operations are underway to find out all the circumstances surrounding the incident. Forensic examinations are underway to find cause of death and a technical examination of the boat. Witnesses are being questioned.

Investigators of the regional investigative authority, criminalists, law-enforcers and rescuers are working at the scene. The investigation is under special control by the head of the investigative authority.
