Businessman internationally wanted for organization of murder of Deputy of Irbit City Duma in Sverdlovsk Region apprehended in Egypt

Sverdlovsk Region investigating bodies of Russia’s Investigative Committee are investigating a criminal case over organization of the murder of Irbit City Duma Deputy Alexander Barybin.

According to investigators, In January 2011 with the intention to lobby for his interests in business, a 43-year-old businessman Alexander Sterkhov, residing in Irbit, hired an inspector of separate company of Traffic Police of Irbit Department of Internal Affairs 25-year-old Anton Gazdeliani to kill Alexander Barybin. On 9 February 2011 when Barybin was leaving his house, a hand-made explosive device made of a standard staff piece of armament – fragmentation hand grenade F-1 planted outside the gates wen off. Fragments of the grenade inflicted wounds to the Deputy’s head and body and he died of them in the hospital. As a result of efficiently planned and carried out search and investigation operations the perpetrator Anton Gazdeliani was detained, but the contractor Alexander Sterkhov fled.

In March this year the court found Gazdeliani guilty of crimes under paragraphs “f” and “h” of part 2 of article 105 (murder committed in a generally dangerous way by hire), part 1 of article 222 (illegal handling of armaments) and part 1 of article 223 of RF Criminal Code (illegal manufacture of explosive devices). He was sentenced to 14 years in high-security correctional facility and a fine of 110 thousand rubles. Sterkhov was put in an international wanted list, and under the investigators’ petition, the court chose a pre-trial restraining measure of custody for him. Criminal Case against Sterkhov was separated.

Later, due to efficiently planned and carried out search and investigation operations law enforcement agents was identified and detained in an apartment in Cairo of Egypt. Currently Sterkhov has been delivered to Yekaterinburg and taken into custody. He is charged with crimes under part 3 of article 33, paragraphs “f” and “h” of part 2 of article 105 of RF Criminal Code (organization of a murder committed in a generally dangerous way by hire). A number of investigation operations are under way to consolidate evidence. Investigation is to be continued.
