Pre-investigation check launched into spill of mazut in Research Institute of Nuclear Reactors in Dimitrovgrad of Ulyanovsk Region

Investigating bodies of Volga Inter-Regional Environmental Investigations Directorate of the Russia’s Investigative Committee are checking the fact of emergency spill of mazut from a heat and power plant of Research Institute of Nuclear Reactors in Dimitrovgrad of Ulyanovsk Region.

According to preliminary information, on 23 August 2012 as a result of breakdown in process during the work with mazut reservoirs one of them was overfilled which led to spill of 50 tons of mazut. The most of mazut was collected in the territory of the Institute, but several tons went into a natural brook through a rainwater disposal.

During the examination of the incident scene, it was established that along the whole length of the brook, and this is about 1.7 km, its channel, banks and plants growing around them were contaminated with oil products. Samples of water and soil were taken to establish the level of negative effect on the object of environment. The samples are being analyzed.

Checks are under way at present to find out all the circumstances of the incident. A procedural decision will be made after the check.
