In Sakhalin Region criminal investigation launched against local man shooting in Voskresensky Cathedral

The investigating bodies of the Russia’s Investigative Committee in Sakhalin Region have opened a criminal case against a resident of the city of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, who opened fire in the Voskresensky Cathedral as containing signs of the crime under paragraph “a” of part 2 of article 105 of the RF Penal Code (murder of two and more people).

According to investigators, on 9 February 2014, about 2 PM local time, a man, born in 1989, who had worked in a private security agency, opened fire at the churchgoers and clergymen inside the Voskresensky Cathedral in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk. A nun and a churchgoer were killed. Six more people were wounded and taken to hospitals. The gunman was detained at the scene.

By now the man has been questioned by an investigator of the Russia’s Investigative Committee. The investigator is going to ask the court to take the shooter in custody. A number of Investigating measures are underway to find all the circumstances of the crime. In the near future the man is going to be evaluated by psychologists and psychiatrists, who will decide his sanity.
